Crescent Point Energy Corp. was the most active operator on Thursday afternoon, with 16 rigs at work, followed closely by Tourmaline Oil Corp. with 15 active rigs.

There were 224 rigs at work Thursday afternoon in Western Canada (35 per cent of the fleet was active), up from 218 active rigs at the close of last week (34 per cent active), according to Rig Locator.

Drillers have over 100 more rigs working this week compared to the same week a year ago.

During the same week in 2016, operators had 118 rigs at work (18 per cent active rate).

Active rigs on the Rig Locator website are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving.

(Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down).
