SaskTel not for sale, government won’t take anything to referendum: Wall

Premier Brad Wall says SaskTel is not for sale and won’t be sold, even if an offer to purchase the Crown is brought to the government.

Since MTS in Manitoba was sold last year, Wall has said if a reasonable offer to purchase SaskTel is put forth, the government would be duty bound to bring the offer to taxpayers in a referendum. Even if that offer were to come now, Wall says a sale isn’t happening.

“We won’t be taking anything to a referendum and that’s just based on, frankly, a useful process,” Wall said Monday, the first day of the spring Legislative Assembly.

Wall said a year ago that if Saskatchewan got a big offer that checked off boxes in terms of job retention and money brought in to the province among other factors, it would be worth considering. While Saskatchewan faces a deficit of more than $1 billion many thought that could signal selling off SaskTel would be more attractive to the government.

Wall said the government could still listen to offers to partner with other companies so long as taxpayers retain control of the company.

“I just have the clearest sense from voters … and they’re not interested,” said Wall. “They’re not interested in a referendum. They’re not interested in a potential sale of SaskTel.”
