Rig counts in Western Canada have stayed fairly steady the past few days, reaching 146 active rigs on Thursday afternoon compared to 143 at the close of last week, according to Rig Locator data.

Crescent Point Energy Corp. retains its position this week as the most active driller.

The producer had 18 active rigs on Thursday afternoon, twice as many as second-place finisher Tourmaline Oil Corp., with nine active rigs.

Overall, Thursday’s 146 active rigs represented a fleet activity rate of 22 per cent.

A year ago this week, 194 rigs were active in Western Canada out of a fleet of 755 rigs, for a 26 per cent active rate.

Active rigs on the Rig Locator website are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving. (Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down.)
